Assessment of energetic requirements of reared molluscs and of their main competitors ArchiMer
Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc.
In the context of aquaculture in open sea• the amount: and qua11ty of food is variable according to the season and the physical flux in the ecosystem (carrying capacity ecosystems ). Thus to predict the potential al production of a cultivated ecosystem, it is mandatory 'co know ~he seasona1 changes in organisms energy balance of cultivated organisms. These changes result from the environmental variability either in the temperature or more significantly in the nutrients supply (Bayne and Newell, 1983). The techniques of physiological energetics allow to understand the adaptations of the energy balance in bivalve molluscs and to calculate the complete energy budget all over the seasonal variations of the field. Such studies are few, they include...

Genetic bases and variability of physiological traits involved in growth in Crassostrea gigas - First Progress Report 1st January-31st December 1996 - Contract n° FAIR 95-421 Commission of the European Communities ArchiMer

The EEC project "Genephys 1996-2000", initiated by the IFREMER laboratory GAP (Génetique, Aquaculture et Pathologie, La Tremblade and CREMA (Centre de Recherche en Ecologie Marine et Aquaculture, l'Houmeau), aims to establish the relationships between physiological traits involved in growth (oxygen consumption, absorption efficiency, scope for growth) and their genetic bases (determinism, variability within and among populations) in cupped oyster Crassostrea gigas. The main objectives are: 1- To express the maximum variability of growth, both at the larval stage and at the adult stage, in an oyster population originating from parents of various origins. 2- To check the persistence over the time, of growth performance and related physiological functions. 3-...

Nutrition and reproduction are key parameters in the interaction process leading to Crassostrea gigas oyster summer mortality in France ArchiMer

Complex interactions between oyster, environment and pathogens were observed during the MOREST (2001-2005) project on summer mortality events of Crassostrea gigas oysters in France. The talk will show how nutrition level increasing reproductive intensity generates a risk for pathogen infection under synergistic effect of temperature and stress. Moreover, a genetic component is associated to specific reproductive performances and spawning behaviour. To better understand origin of such resistance or susceptibility to summer mortality, other characteristics as stress susceptibility, energy management and hemocyte activities of oysters from the two phenotypes were compared. This first comparison suggests interactions between stress, reproduction and defence...
